Linda Lamb is a singer and musician from New York who has recently settled in Wales with her family. She has worked mainly as a solo artist but has also collaborated with Vitalic and Nina Hagen, to name a few. She is most known for her self-produced underground hit Hot Room and for the song Bells which she co-wrote with Vitalic.

The poetry of Margaret Sandbach was brought to Linda's attention by Mark Baker. Linda then proceeded to write some music to the poem Lamentation and performed the piece with students from the Royal Welsh College of Music. The beautiful and haunting reinterpretation of the poem attracted media attention, which allowed her to receive a small grant from the Arts Council Wales in 2011. Linda was then able to write more music to the poetry of Margaret Sandbach that was then recorded as a full album in 2012, after receiving a second grant from the Arts Council Wales.
The album, co-produced by Adam Fuest, was recorded in the summer of 2012 in the Brecon Beacons at Twin Peaks studio and features the talented musician Graham Henderson. Linda felt that being immersed in an environment of such astounding natural beauty was inspirational and influential to the development of the album, especially considering that the beauty and solitude of nature were so integral to the poetry of Margaret Sandbach.

When initially writing the music Linda would surround herself with Margaret’s poetry and start playing melodies, picking a poem that could flow with the music and seeing which one would fit best in the time structure of the melody. Linda says that the arrangement of the music was often unpredictable and she noticed the songs would seem to effortlessly stream into different musical genres, sometimes edging towards melodies with a blues feel, whilst others would be more hymn-like and even medieval in tone. Linda mentioned that this experience of working was quite unconventional for her and that this project felt more like a collaboratory effort between herself and Margaret, rather than one artist’s interpretation of another artist’s work.

Linda feels that Margaret Sandbach was an incredibly brave woman and an amazing example of creative fortitude. Margaret was a poet whose creative output was sadly halted prematurely due to her death from breast cancer at the age of 40. Linda sees this project as a continuation of Margaret’s poetic creations and as a way of finally introducing the work of the late Welsh poet to the general public.
